Kara Walker was born in 1969 in Stockton, California. She earned a B.F.A from Atlanta College of Art and an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and she has taught art and exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world. In 1997, Walker received an award, known as a “genius grant,” from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Kara Walker uses paint, etching and especially her paper cut-out technique to share her interpretation of the horrors of the antebellum South and to explore race relations.
