Rural Humanities Project

Between 1987 and 1990, several folklife surveys were initiated in multi-county regions across South Carolina. Fieldwork was conducted in Abbeville, Anderson, Chesterfield, Colleton, Oconee, Greenwood, Pickens, Hampton, Jasper, McCormick and Marlboro counties. Professional folklorists traveled the regions documenting folk culture through audio recordings, both black and white and color photography, and extensive fieldnotes. This fieldwork laid the foundation for documentation that continues to this day.

A vast range of traditions were documented during the initial survey, including split-oak basketry, bluegrass, quilting, foodlore, folk medicine, and blues music. This project led to the development of the Rural Arts Initiative in 1991 as well as the Folk Arts Apprenticeship program that continues today.
